1. Louise Wener – Different For Girls: My True Life Adventures In Pop (2010)

The first half of this book is predominantly Wener describing her life before fame and what it was like growing up in the suburbs in the 80s vs 90s. She talks about her experiences with Top of The Pops and mentions famous music stars that she toured with, such as Elvis Costello. Many comments are made on the Britpop era which is particularly interesting coming from an insider pop star perspective. Wener is very honest and upfront throughout and opens up about the areas she believed that she lacked talent. And also about all of the band’s adventures, including the alcohol abuse, drug-taking etc. This book communicates the realities of being a pop star during this time and an inside view into the music industry.

2. David Buckley – Strange Fascination: David Bowie – The Definitive Story (1999)

The world-renowned English singer-songwriter superstar David Bowie sadly passed away in 2016. Shortly after, Buckley decided to pay tribute to him with this biography. This is also a book for The Beatles fans! Many argue that Mark Lewisohn has written the best Beatles biography because his opinions are more informed and less biased than other authors. This is because he has constructed hundreds of interviews about the full story of the work and lives of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. All About Love: New Visions by bell hooks

This book really is life-changing and will give you a more informed perspective on what love really means. It has some very insightful points that certainly get you thinking. My personal favourite quotes from out of this book were:

”love and abuse cannot coexist”

”True love is unconditional, but to truly flourish it requires an ongoing commitment to constructive struggle and change”

”Domination cannot exist where a love ethic prevails”

Hooks gives many thought-provoking insights throughout which can be helpful for adults of all ages but particularly for young women facing a transitional period in their lives. The focus is on what love really means, especially in today’s social climate. It helps you understand people in a deeper way and why everyone operates differently when it comes to love. She’s vulnerable and honest about her love heartbreaks and the pain that she’s faced throughout her life. And explains it in a very logical way with powerful words beautifully written. Her own experiences and understandings will help you understand the love you’ve experienced throughout your life.

Badass Affirmations: The Wit and Wisdom of Wild Women by Becca Anderson

This book focuses on women rights, affirmations and manifesting. She writes about many strong women and their accomplishments to give inspiration to the readers. The insights into these women’s lives do not just focus on the successes but also the struggles they face too. She gives step by step guidance into how to affirm and manifest your visions and goals. And how to take control of your life and become a badass woman. It’s more of a confidence booster than a book with new and insightful information. However, it might be just the motivation you need to follow your dreams and to stop making excuses! Sometimes you just need a reminder that you’re a badass.

The Comfort Book by Matt Haig

This is a must-read for anyone who is struggling with their mental health. And it’s one for the overthinkers, over analyzers, or pessimists too! It’s heartfelt, impactful, honest and uplifting all at the same time. There is one thing for sure, this book will give you the positivity to get through the week. And if you’re anything like me, you’ll find yourself referring to the beautifully written points time and time again when life gets difficult. It’s clear that Haig has written this book to give the world comfort and hope. It’s filled with words of wisdom that aim to help people through struggles and even the toughest of times. Unfuck Your Brain: Using Science to Get Over Anxiety, Depression, Anger, Freak-outs, and Triggers by Faith G. Harper

This book is another one to read if you’re struggling with any mental health issues or somebody close to you is. It covers a variety of topics, such as mental health issues (particularly anxiety and depression), anger problems, traumas and triggers. Harper explains the effects these conditions have on your brain using real scientific evidence. He focuses most of his writings on trauma because he believes it’s a very stigmatized area of mental health. There are countless genres of music. Let’s take a look at the most popular and listened to…

Pop Music

As the title itself suggests, pop music is the most popular and listened to the music genre of all time. This genre has expanded and changed significantly over time and is now rather hard to define. For example, originally pop music started off as more of an electronic genre now it’s predominately hip-hop and rap. With many other genres too!

Jazz

Jazz music was born in America and was born ins New Orleans, Louisiana in the late 19th century. And I think we can all agree that it’s become one of the most popular genres of music. This music genre was mainly listened to and played within African-American communities. Jazz music is seen as representing cultural diversity, individualism and authenticness.

Rock

Rock music, also referred to as ”Rock N Roll” was created in 1955 by the talented Chuck Berry. And it was practically an overnight success! This genre has produced some of the biggest music names in the industry. With the likes of Elvis Pressley (1935 – 1977), David Bowie (1947 – 2016) and Paul McCartney (1942). The genre has grown to become extremely diverse with a whole range of themes. Usually, they are social or political.

Classical Music

This genre has its roots deeply in Western culture and became in Europe as early as the 5th Century CE. Instruments that you will typically hear in classical music include flutes, violins, violoncellos, clarinets, trumpets, bassoons, horns and timpanis. Such as, ”Mozart” – Eine kleine Nachtmusik, ”Beethoven” – Für Elise, ”Puccini – ‘O mio babbino caro”’ from Gianni Schicchi, Vivaldi – The Four Seasons and many more.

Hip Hop Music

Hip Hop (also called rap music) originated in New York, United States in the early 1970s. It began at block parties because DJ would talk throughout the breaks in between each song. They needed to keep the crowd entertained so would sometimes rhyme whilst they’re talking over some instrumental music. Eventually, MC’s were introduced with the job of introducing the next music artist and talk/rhyme in the breaks. Eventually, they would do it in sync with the music and the hip hop/ rap culture kickstarted.

Reggae

The genre of reggae came about in the late 1960s and originated from Jamacia. It’s very linked to It didn’t take long for it to become an extremely popular genre of music and spread worldwide. Instruments usually included in reggae are drums, bass guitars and electric guitars. It’s known for lifting peoples spirits with its upbeat drums which create a cheerful atmosphere. It brings chaos and calms into one. So you’ll feel relaxed too. If you haven’t heard the music of some of the most famous reggae artists of all time, you must have been living under a rock.
